Greenfield in the Community

One of our key aims at Greenfield is to empower children to be active members of the local and wider community.

As part of our holistic approach to education, we aim to ensure that Greenfield School pupils have a meaningful and positive impact on the world around them – whether that be individual fundraising or larger community projects.

With the abundance of opportunities that are available to children at Greenfield, we are proud to share our facilities and resources with the wider community in a range of applications.

School Partnerships

Children's Festivals

Every year our Heads of Social Responsibility host a Children’s Festival, where children from preparatory and state schools across Surrey come together for a day of activities and discussions around the topics of equality and sustainability.

We have seen the impacts that humanity has had on our environment, our economy and our society; in order to prepare our future world leaders to make a positive change in the world, the children’s festival aims to inspire the leaders of tomorrow to tackle change.

At the Children’s Festival, the aim of the day is to empower children to understand how their influence can be a force for change in the world.

Maths and English Challenges

We relish the opportunity to invite other local school children to join us for our Maths and English challenge days. Typically aimed at a particular year group, these days consist of a series of puzzles or activities with one school being crowned winner by an independent judge.

Tournaments

Hosting up to 10 different schools at a time, we take the opportunity to use our green field as much as possible, now that we have an abundance of space at our disposal. Football tournaments and festivals for boys and girls are regularly hosted with schools in the area, and with our new Sports Hall and outdoor netball courts, we are pleased to offer netball, basketball and hockey tournaments with the new facilities.

Sythwood School

Each year we host a series of creative workshops at Greenfield with Sythwood School children. The children have enjoyed using our VR Headsets to explore the vast world of virtual reality in their science workshops. We have also welcomed children to art sessions with our Head of Art Mrs Goodwill and gymnastics sessions. Children from Sythwood who showed particular skill in these areas have been invited back to participate in our scholars’ groups or additional coaching sessions.

Charity and Outreach

Sea Changers (2024)

This year the Future World Team have chosen marine conservationists, Sea Changers as their chosen charity for their fundraising efforts. Thinking about marine biology in line with the global sustainable future aims, the Future World Team focused their efforts and rallied to send our support to the Sea Changers. So far we have raised nearly £400 through bake sales at school and other fundraising efforts this year.

Dragon’s Den - £3K+ for various charities

The Dragon’s Den starts off with the children forming teams and choosing a charity. Then, the children research and develop a business plan and pitch their ideas to the Dragon’s Den Panel in order to gain funding. Once funding is obtained they will then make their products at school and set up a stall within our school “market”, where products can be bought and sold to other children. All profits are donated to the children’s chosen charities.

In 2024, the children raised over £3000 for MacMillan, British Heart Foundation, Alzeimer’s UK, Sepsis UK, Lighthouse, and the Gorilla Organisation. The previous year, the children raised an outstanding £1823.24 for the following charities: LinkAble, Support Dogs, Macmillan Cancer Support, UNICEF, Dementia UK and Disasters Emergency.

It is heartening to see our pupils using their skills and creativity to think on their feet and try to make a positive difference in the world, and we are incredibly proud of their achievements. Their attention to detail and creativity during the process allowed each team to keep costs extremely low, therefore the amount of profit left for charity was at an all-time high! Children are the pioneers of the future, and events like the Dragons Den challenge are a fantastic way to allow them to take risks, think laterally and improve their decision-making and problem-solving skills. We can’t wait to see what our students come up with next year !

Bag2School

Our Friends of Greenfield School (FroGS) organise regular clothes donations, which have a two-fold positive impact: by decluttering and donating, families reduce waste and provide for someone in need; and by donating through Bag2School we are able to raise funds for charitable endeavours. This year our proceeds from clothes donations go to Sea Changers.

Place2Be

Every year, we wholeheartedly embrace Children’s Mental Health Week, a significant event organized annually by the Place2Be charity. Celebrating its 10th year, this week was dedicated to the theme “Your Voice Matters,” encouraging each child to express their individuality and emphasizing the importance of speaking up about our mental wellbeing. Place2Be came up with the idea of having a ‘Dress2Express’ Day where children have the opportunity to wear an outfit that reflects their authentic selves, and we were delighted to raise nearly £400 for the charity.

Woking Food Bank

Woking Food Bank

Every year the school community comes together to donate as much as we possibly can to Woking Food Bank for Harvest Festival. From toiletries, tins and dry goods, we filled our minibus to the brim with bulging bags for the food bank. Our Head Boy, Head Girl, and Deputy Head Boy and Girl in Year 6 joined Mr Brown to help unload our goods at the warehouse and were grateful to learn all about the amazing efforts of the food bank and how our contribution can make a difference.

Children in Need

Greenfield hosted a cosy pyjama day to raise money for Children in Need this year! What a Friday treat, being at school in slippers, robes, onesies… even the odd eye mask! Thank you everyone who brought in their coins to donate.

MacMillan Cancer Support

Teachers and staff at Greenfield rolled up their sleeves and got into the competitive baking spirit this year, hosting a bake off in the Dining Hall. With incredible feats of baking by our amateur chefs, the staff managed to raise over £200 for Macmillan Cancer in 2023. Bravo to Mr Gudgeon who won this year’s competition with his carrot cake, winning the Macmillan Champion mug.

Christmas Outreach

There are so many fantastic organisations on our doorstep that we want to show our appreciation for – so for Christmas we get the children to show their support in a way that only they can – with handwritten messages of support and drawings in a Christmas card from all the children. This year we sent their masterpieces toWoking Sam and Beare, Chobham West End Medical Practice, Biffa, Woking Library, Woking Food Bank, Jigsaw, Woking Walk-in centre, Surrey Police, Woking Fire Station, South View Medical centre, Woking Council – and our own caretakers for keeping the school running smoothly!

The festive period is a great opportunity to spread Christmas cheer through singing – over the years our school choir has visited the Lighthouse centre and Bernard Sunley in Woking to speak with residents and have a merry sing-song.

WWF (2023)

In 2022/23 our Future World Team’s chosen charity was the WWF, thinking about animal conservation around the world. We were delighted to raise money for WWF through bake sales throughout the year and our Bag2School donations.

Our Young Zoologists club have been keen to adopt an animal for some time, and in 2022 they sponsored a leopard! With regular updates on their leopard, the children are able to enrich their learning in Young Zoologists club whilst gaining valuable insight into how charities can support every animal. Our Greenfield leopard was named ‘Luna’ by one of our Year 1 children, in reference to the leopard’s nocturnal lifestyle.

Comic Relief (2022)

For Red Nose Day in 2022, we handed the reigns to our Year 6 pupils, allowing them to take responsibility and work as a team to organise our fundraising for Comic Relief. The children decided on a “Crazy Hair” Mufti Day – with some amazing efforts and over £300 for Red Nose Day.

Auditory Verbal UK (2021)

We participated in Loud T-shirt Day! Spurred on by several Greenfield children who are part of the deaf community, this day was all about giving children the opportunity to understand more about the deafness whilst raising money for Auditory Verbal UK, a charity which offers therapy and speech lessons for deaf children.

Sal's Shoes (2021)

At the end of the academic year, we asked all families to bring in their child’s outgrown shoes to donate – we were able to fill 7 large boxes with over 60 pairs of shoes to donate to Sal’s Shoes, where they will be given to children who are living without shoes.

Swimathon (2020)

In Autumn, children and staff participated in the Woking Swimathon, raising a whopping £1000 for the Woking Rotary Club’s chosen charities: Mayor of Woking’s Charity (Linkable), Friends of Woking High School, Swan Trust, Woking and Sam Beare Hospice and Riding for the Disabled.

York Road (2020)

When it was announced that our children would not be returning to school in January 2021, our kitchen had already ordered food in anticipation of over 300 hungry children. Rather than let it go to waste, we loaded up our minibus and took the spare food to York Road where the food could feed others in need.

Hatton Musical Theatre

Every year our families are delighted by the incredible shows that their children put on in the Ruth Hicks Hall, a versatile auditorium that features staging, curtains and lighting to bring productions to the next level. This year we are delighted to welcome Hatton Musical Theatre to the school for evening rehearsals ahead of their two fully staged top-quality musical productions each year.

Since then Hatton has grown, encouraging both young and old to nurture their theatrical talent and gain experience with us. Hatton has earned a reputation for always putting on high-quality shows and has seen many members go on to become professional training at places such as, ArtsEd, GSA, PPA and many others.

Woking Choral Society

ladies in the choir

Once or twice a year for Greenfield ceremonies and concerts, our new Sports Hall is transformed into a sprawling performance space complete with staging and soft flooring – with incredible acoustics! Naturally when approached by the Woking Choral Society in regards to their end of year performance, we knew that this was the only way we could suitable host their event. Accompanied by three outstanding soloists, two brilliant pianists and one might percussion ensemble, the concert was a night to remember and we hope to host many more with Woking Choral Society.

Little Roo Neonatal Trust

Little Roo Neonatal Trust

little roo

In 2023, the Little Roo Trust celebrated it’s 75th birthday. The trust was set up to support children in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at St Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey and have supported thousands of families over the years whose babies are born prematurely. Several Greenfield families have been helped by the Trust over the years and so we were delighted to form a partnership when a previous parent at Greenfield contacted us to host this event.

Radio Wey set up and covered the event, whilst various stalls were set up around the field including raffles, face painting, entertainment and refreshments. Families enjoyed picnicking on the grass, whilst in the Dining Hall the children participated in a joint art effort that symbolised the coming together of so many Little Roo families. It was wonderful to host so many families and children and celebrate the brilliant work of the Trust; we look forward to hosting Little Roo’s next milestone celebration with us in 2024.
