Greenfield Celebrates the King’s Coronation

Posted: 5th May 2023

On Saturday 6th May 2023, we celebrate a historic day for Great Britain – King Charles’ coronation.

Whilst we get ready for a much-anticipated long weekend with coronation celebrations across the country, we celebrated our new monarch at school on Friday 5th May 2023. Children and staff were invited to wear red, white and blue at school, including lots of union jack accessories and flags!

In a special assembly we sang “God Save The King” as a whole school, led by our full school orchestra, including drums, guitars, keyboard, and our brass band. Incredible!

Next, we learned about the Union Jack and the different flags it represents across the United Kingdom. To conclude our special coronation assembly, the children sang “Defender of Us All”, led by a few of our Year 6 scholars.

Defender Of Us All is a piece written by Daniel and Sandra Nicholls – Kate Middleton’s old piano teachers – and the couple also composed a song for William and Kate’s royal wedding. They have now composed ‘Defender of Us All’ for the King’s coronation, and we were excited to sing this song alongside schools across the nation on Friday at 11am.

For lunch, we enjoyed a British banquet – including fish and chips, mushy peas, curry sauce, quiche, sausage rolls, union jack cupcakes and our Chef’s trifle. Thank you to our brilliant kitchen team who can always be relied upon to bring the festivities to our Dining Hall!

In the Little School, children enjoyed a royal luncheon of their own, donning crowns they had made in the morning, and enjoying a dignified “fish and chips” tea party fit for a king.

Wishing everyone a wonderful bank holiday weekend as we celebrate King Charles’ coronation.
