Director of Sport, Mr Dan Maxwell, shares exciting new opportunities for Greenfield pupils and considers how a ‘sport for all’ mentality benefits us all.
New Year, New Opportunities
The new year is a time for fresh starts, and what better way to begin than by exploring the diverse and exciting sporting opportunities available to all pupils at Greenfield? From a more varied clubs offering to thrilling events, 2025 is shaping up to be a year where sport truly becomes for all.
Broadening Horizons with Opportunity and Exposure
This academic year, the PE spotlight at Greenfield has expanded to include sports like dodgeball, table tennis, volleyball, badminton, dance, gymnastics, lacrosse and even ultimate frisbee. Many of these sports promote different skillsets to traditional team games (which are still a valued part of our PE curriculum) and therefore cater to a wider range of interests and abilities. Table tennis, for instance, boosts strategic thinking and improves concentration, while ultimate frisbee emphasises teamwork and agility in a refreshing, non-contact format.
By incorporating such activities, Greenfield are at the forefront of change, making strides in inclusivity and showing that physical education can be as varied and exciting as the students we teach. These new opportunities allow games players to broaden their skillset and ultimately improve their performance on the playing field.
More Fixtures and Revitalised Clubs Provision
We strive to be different and, since September, fixtures in Capture the Flag and Basketball have featured in the programme. We’ve added additional fixtures to our calendar and one of the standout additions this year is climbing. Participants can look forward to scaling new heights – quite literally!
Beyond the curriculum, school clubs have expanded to include table tennis, fitness circuits, and even pad boxing, proving that “sport for all” isn’t just a tagline but a reality at Greenfield. These clubs offer a low-pressure environment for pupils to stay active, socialise, and develop new skills.
Surrey Half: A Community Celebration
Perhaps the most anticipated event is Greenfield’s community participation in the Surrey Half children’s 2km, with Ava Abdeen at the forefront rallying the troops and asking the children to select a chosen charity together. Scheduled for spring, this event brings together students, staff, and families for a day of camaraderie and light-hearted competition. The emphasis is on participation, with everyone from seasoned runners to enthusiastic walkers encouraged to join. Whether you’re racing for a personal best or strolling with friends, the fun run is a perfect example of sport bringing people together.
A Year to Discover Your Sport
With such a variety of opportunities, 2025 is the year to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. Whether you’re curious about a niche club, or simply looking forward to the Surrey Half, there’s something for everyone.
So, lace up your trainers, grab a friend, and dive into the vibrant world of sport for all.
