A Lightbulb Moment

During Children’s Mental Health Week, our Head of Middle School, Mrs. Morey, encountered a perfect example of the wonderful moment when a child illustrates that all the lessons, input, conversations, reading, references, and activities really are making a difference!

Here is an example of one those golden lightbulb moments when children independently prove their understanding of why teaching and learning at Greenfield matters in their daily lives:

During English, we were celebrating ‘Children’s Mental Health Week.’ When asked about The Five Ways to Wellbeing, a child recalled an RE lesson taught by Mr Upcott, linking it to a story from the Hindu faith. During this unprompted recollection, the pupil made the connection that ‘giving’ (one of the 5 ways to Wellbeing), was illustrated clearly in the story of Krishna and Sudama. The Year 6 child stated that the moral of the story was that sometimes inexpensive gifts can have the greatest value, including things like: giving time, showing love or sharing happiness.

We constantly try to ensure that children’s learning is both engaging and informative here, and when a primary school aged child can make connections between English, PSHE, Children’s Mental Health and R.E, we know we have achieved our mission. It makes teaching such a worthwhile job for so many of us. This is why we do what we do, and why we love to do it at Greenfield: nurturing independent, forward-thinking citizens of the future, who can think outside of the box.
