In a world where diversity is increasingly recognised and celebrated, Greenfield School places inclusion at the forefront of its ethos, particularly during Neurodiversity Celebration Week. This week, we come together to celebrate the beautiful tapestry of minds that make up our community.
Throughout this week, the children have had opportunities to reflect on how they learn best and explore different forms of neurodiversity, including ADHD, Autism, and processing difficulties. In form times and classroom sessions, they’ve engaged in meaningful conversations about the value of neurodiversity and the extraordinary perspectives that individuals bring to our world.
One of the highlights of our activities included two videos for varying age groups that shed light on the various ways people with autism and ADHD may think differently, leading to diverse methods of processing and communication, illustrated in a straightforward and child-friendly way (“If a PS5 game doesn’t work in an Xbox console, it doesn’t mean it’s broken!”) Following the videos, students had the chance to share their thoughts and insights, fostering empathy and understanding within the classroom.
Another engaging activity involved small groups of children working on tasks with different sets of instructions, presented in various formats ranging from long-form paragraphs to visual aides. Despite the differing communication methods, all groups were working the same outcome but had very different experiences on the journey to reach that point. This exercise served as a powerful reminder of how all individuals respond differently to communication styles and the importance of being mindful of each other’s needs.
We are incredibly proud of our students’ compassion, self-awareness, and eagerness to embrace diversity in all its forms. Their willingness to understand and respect one another’s differences sets a shining example for our entire community.
As Neurodiversity Week draws to a close, we continue to celebrate the beautiful assortment of minds that make up Greenfield School, and strive to create an environment where every individual feels valued, understood, and supported in their unique journey of learning and growth.
